小編成の室内楽曲では、もう一つ楽器が参加しているかのように聞かせるような仕掛を好む。これは大編成の曲では成し得ない。故に小編成の曲においては、概して、必然的に細かい表現が多く、小さな場所に素材を書き足すような作業になる。

My works for small chamber ensembles seldom seek to 'enlarge' the sound, to create the illusion that additional instruments are present; rather, I prefer to capitalize upon subtitles, details, intimacy which could never function effectively within the context of a larger-scale work. Hence, they become proportionally more minimal in nature, and draw upon a far more modest pool of material.

ポール・クリフト

1978年オーストラリア生まれ。コロンビア大学音楽学部作曲科博士課程在籍。モナッシュ大学音楽学部卒業。ロンドン・キングスカレッジ音楽学部にて修士課程を修了。イルカムの作曲コースに参加。作品はしばし文学、ヴィジュアルアート、音声学と結びつけられ、微分音の調和のとれたハーモニー、異質な構造、巧妙な譜割の仕方などが特徴とされる。www.paulclift.net

Paul Clift (b. 1978) is an Australian composer currently living in New York. At present he is a doctoral candidate in composition at Columbia University. He obtained a Master of Music (M.Mus) at King's College, London and a Bachelor of Arts (B.A. hons) at Monash University Conservatorium. He also participated in the New Music Technology and Composition Cursus at IRCAM. Paul's music is characterised both by its abstract associations with literature, visual-arts & linguistics, and concretely, by rich harmonic micro-tonality, textural heterogeneity and a manipulation of temporal perception. アルバン・ベルクの２つの弦楽四重奏へのオマージュ。和声は弦楽四重奏３番の冒頭部分より採られ、叙情的な部分は４つのパターンに分かれており、いずれもベルクの作品に深い影響を受けている。トリオとしてバランス良く響くよう均衡を求め、細かいところでも緊張感を持たせた。

This composition is an homage to the two String Quartet of Alban Berg. The harmonic structure derives directly from the first measures of the String Quartet op. 3 and the Lyrische Suite and was construct by 4 different Series closely connect to the Berg's compositions. The "sound" of the trio is obtained searching an equilibrium between the impression and the study of the 2 scores trying to match also in minimum part, the tension of the Berg's masterpieces.

2002年にピアノのディプロマをヴェローナで取得し、2008年にミラノにて作曲ノディプロマを満場一致で取得。2005年ルクセンブルク国際作曲賞、2007年スェーデンのインターナショナル・コンポジション・オーケストラ！プロジェクト、2008年イタリアのフェスティバル・ポンティーノ、同年国際作曲コンクール・ロンドなど、受賞は数多い。

He took in 2002, his piano Diploma in Verona and in 2008 his composition Diploma in Milano with maximum votes. Winner in the "International Composition Prize Luxembourg 2005" with the composition for big ensemble "di tenue vivo chiarore", absolute winner in the "International Composition Orchestra!- project 2007" (Helsingborg – Sweden) with the composition for orchestra "Stronger", winner of the premium of "Festival Pontino 2008" (Sermoneta – Italy) with the composition for cello and piano "Volo" and winner in the International competition "Rondo ́" with the composition for piano solo "Les Höldempe D.O.K." .
