PROGRAM NOTE
mirth
The title "Mirth" comes from the Japanese proverb, "Warau kado ni wa fuku kitaru". “Warau” means laughing, smiling, any kind of mirth coming out of happiness (“fuku”). A “kado” is a gate, which implies family, groups, social gatherings, any sort of party. This proverb says that happiness comes wherever people laugh.

PROGRAM NOTE
fl/vn 2b
fl/vln2, written for the Hibari Project, is guided by harmonic structures of the violin part, which is a backwards fantasia on James Tenney's KOAN. I was touched to be asked to compose for a project intended to offer any kind of hope or support for Japan in the time following such tragedies.
